The Rise started in NYC, and we have a rich history in this fine city. But the fact is – the spirit of The Rise is not (and should not be) confined to arbitrarily-drawn borders. It should be free-flowing, like the Hudson River, or the Colorado River. Or the Rillito River. Or the Elsterflutbett. And what do these rivers have in common? Their proximity to Rise locations! The Rise global takeover has begun.
We have (as of January 2018) three additional locations in Austin, Texas; Tucson, Arizona; and Leipzig, Germany. All these workouts embody the three rules, but have their own traditions and execute their workouts in their own unique way. Let’s take a look, shall we?
The Rise ATX (often shortened to RiseATX) was started by Rise cofounder Dave Johnson, who lamented the lack of quality post-workout breakfast taco providers in NYC. The group meets at 5:12 AM – a nod to Austin’s 512 area code – Tuesdays and Thursdays at Doug Sahm Hill. The workouts are 45 minutes long and are guaranteed to make you sweat!
The group also organizes a Sunday morning throwdown once a month around some crazy challenge. In December they did 1600 meters of lunges. That’s just under a mile. Ouch.
Here’s what RiseATX leader and certified badass Katherine Zuraitis has to say about the group:
I found RiseATX a little over a year ago. I had just moved back to Austin, TX and was looking for workouts other than Gym Group X classes. I knew that I really enjoyed working out with other people because of the motivation and encouragement. My first morning on top of the hill was a lot of fun and I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t discovered this group earlier. Everyone was welcoming and approached me with a ton of high fives. I was a little out of my element because I had never joined a group at 5:12am in the dark, by myself. However all of my anxiety quickly faded away and I knew that I had found an awesome group of people that enjoyed working out together.
Now 15 months later, I can’t imagine this group not being a part of my life routine. I’ve met so many great friends, literally experienced blood, sweat, and tears, and watched the size of this group double. I have had the privilege and great opportunity to lead this group through a name workout series. These workouts were named after the members of RiseATX, and consisted of their favorite exercises to the beat of their favorite workout songs. I had so much fun creating these workouts and had even more fun leading them. RiseATX is such an awesome community and I absolutely love sharing it with other people. Cheers to many more early morning workouts on top of the hill at 5:12am. Thank you RiseATX!
I love you
The Rise TUC is the brainchild of Laura Schultz, a member of the ATX chapter who moved to Tucson and took the Rise spirit with her! The Rise provides essential cross-training for Laura, who dances ballet professionally. And everyone knows that dancers do the most hardcore Burpees!
The Rise Tucson meets at Morris K Udall Park at 5:45 AM, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Like Austin, Tucson sweats for 45 minutes at a time.
Here’s what Laura has to say!
The Rise has become a big part of my life. I love being able to wake up, workout, and high-five – all before the sun comes up! Our workouts include HIIT, body weight burners, sprints, AMRAPs, calisthenics, and dynamic stretching.
I started The Rise Tucson group up back in September . Since our first workout, we’ve recruited a core group of Risers – but we love seeing new faces every week!
The Rise has become a staple in my workout routines. I’m currently dancing with a professional ballet company and try to do as much cross training as possible. The Rise has been a great way to do that! It’s a fun workout, and I feel ready to tackle the day after finishing our 45 minute workouts.
The Rise is a great way to make new friends and wake up the sun!
Leipzig is the first Rise community established outside of the US! Pablo Duarte has been giving Germany the gift of The Rise since mid-2016. The group works out Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6:30 AM, usually at Lene-Voigt-Park. The workouts run 30 minutes long. They have also introduced a monthly Saturday morning workout (at the much more reasonable hour of 9:30 AM).
I’ll let Pablo take it from here!
In June 2016 I moved back to Leipzig after spending two years in NYC and being part of The Rise NYC. Back in Leipzig, my good friend David asked what were those (very cool) pictures of me and other crazy people working out in any weather. I explained what The Rise was. “Is there something like that in Leipzig?”, He asked anxiously. “Not yet”, I said, and the next day we organized a workout at 6:30 AM to which 5 people showed up. Since then, we have been working out 3 times a week in different parks of Leipzig.
The Rise LPZ community is a very diverse and motivated crew. In the city of Bach, Leibniz, Goethe, Merkel and other unpronounceable historical celebrities, we have a Heavy HIIT workout on Mondays, a Wednesday Poker push-up and a Friday knockdown. We also have special events in other cities like Berlin and Munich, and special events like beer races, BBQ workouts and other fun stuff. (Yes! Workout and BBQ!) What are you waiting for? High fives and see you soon!
So what are you waiting for?
The Rise NYC, ATX, TUC, and LPZ all share the same goals – to better ourselves via fitness and friendship! No matter which community you visit, you’re guaranteed to work your butt off and have a great time! Just remember the three rules:
- Anyone can do this.
- Everyone is welcome.
- We will have fun!
