Many of us are runners, many of us are runners but don’t consider ourselves runners. To the latter, I say anyone who laces up their shoes and hits the road, regardless of speed or distance, is a runner! I would ask all of those “I’m a runner” and all of those “I’m not really a runner” check out our sister club TMIRCE, The Most Informal Running Club Ever.
Similar to The Rise, TMIRCE focuses on being supportive, helping one another, and fostering a community of like-minded people. Whenever you are able to show up for your first Track workout (Monday at 7:00PM) or bRUNch run (Saturday at 10:00AM), you will definitely see familiar Rise faces and should expect the same number of high fives, smiles and “yeah buddies”.
I began running when I met The Rise and TMIRCE in the winter of 2013. Through the races, training runs, and general workouts, I was fortunate enough to make some of the greatest friends ever; getting to know them and the reason they run. One thing that echoed across “origin stories”, was the sense of wanting to be a part of the community and wanting to give back. Which brings me to Charity Miles, a community based running app that tracks your miles and donates money to a charity of your choice.
The way it works: “Charity Miles is a free iPhone and Android app that enables people to earn corporate sponsorship for charity while walking, running or biking”. Basically, Charity Miles has a bunch of corporate investors that give to a general fund, runners are able to earn money (from that pool) for the charity they select by running; you are able to select a different charity for each run.
I downloaded the app in late July, and have already raised over $30.00 for ‘Stand Up To Cancer’, while only doing my weekly mileage. I recently set up a “TMIRCE” team so that we can all virtually run together and raise money for various charities, we’ve already raised $95.00 and NYC Marathon season is just revving up!
You can download the app for free from your phones App store, just look for “Charity Miles” and follow the instructions to sign up, using your Facebook account seems to be the easiest way. Once your profile has been created, you can search and join “TMIRCE” in the teams section.
